Index components used in SAFE

During the PDR-C collocation meeting it was agreed to clarify if the index components used in SAFE are really needed for LTDP and decide if this component should be also externalised from the SAFE EO product package.

The attached document “Index Analysis Trade-Off” (PDGS-SAFE-GMV-TN-12/0186) provides the analysis and conclusions reached on this topic.

All your comments will be appreciated.

Re: Index components used in SAFE

While I have nothing to comment on the presented document (TN-12-0186),
I am wondering where I can find PDGS-SAFE-GMV-TN-12-0171 which was cited in this paper. Have I missed something?

The document you mention is the SAFE Simplification design (PDGS-SAFE-GMV-TN-12-0171) and it was written some days ago by GMV but it is not available in this forum yet. We decided to have a preliminary internal review with ESA before publishing in the web and now we are including some additional information according the comments received.

The document will be published no later than next week.

Re: Index components used in SAFE

I agree with the conclusions, although it could be better explained (nevertheless, it is clear that the content of the index files is product specific and thus they cannot be externalized. At the same time, their representation information clearly should be externalized as will be done for the product representation information).

The important thing is that the purpose of the index files is well explained in the Core SAFE documentation, preferably with examples. The problem during the PDR-C was that in the core documentaiton indexes seemed to "fall out of nowhere", without an adequate explanation, so it was difficult to understand why they would be useful. You can explain it well now by making considerations also about the different conformance classes and, again, providing examples.

Another important thing: You should check/define whether index files and their structure changes from specialisation to specialisation. As of today, their structure is presented in the Core control book 1, so it would seem that it is fixed for all SAFE products regardless of their type. Can't they be overridden?

Ok, the trade-off will be updated adding this. In addition, in the Core SAFE documentation (index section) this will be explained as well.

Completely agree, this is our idea as well. The current index section of the Core document is a little poor, therefore this section will be updated accordingly.

The index structure does not change from specialisation to specialisation. Our idea is to have the fixed structure defined in the Core document for all SAFE EO Products regardless of their type, therefore they can not be overridden.
