OSIRIS

Introduction and Objectives

The OSIRIS project (Optical/SAR data and system Integration for Rush Identification of Ship models) is carried out within the ESA GSTP funding programme (General Support Technology Programme).
The main objective of the OSIRIS project is to develop, implement and integrate tools for Earth Observation Maritime Surveillance into an Open-Source platform.
In order to achieve this result, the following activities have been carried out:

  • Analyse, benchmark and prototype advanced technologies for vessel detection, classification, recognition, route prediction and behavior analysis on Earth Observation imagery and AIS data;
  • Prototype a webGIS technology for data handling both raw data and value added products;
  • Adapt developed technologies to EO missions as Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2 (provided by ESA Copernicus Programme), EROS-B (provided by ISI - IMAGESAT INTL, an Israeli company), Cosmo-SkyMed constellation (provided by Italian Space Agency);
  • Implement and integrate developed components into an Open-Source platform to permit users functionalities access;
  • Select and integrate relevant additional sources of information (e.g. maps, ancillary data, etc.) for their use in the platform, in order to improve system capabilities and usability;
  • Demonstrate the platform capabilities on specific USER applications (e.g. Fishing, Oil Pollution, Illegal Immigration, etc.).

Expected Results

The OSIRIS Prototype platform, operating on satellite data (both electro optical and radar) and on AIS data, provides the following main systems:
1. OSIRIS-USER system to access the products:

  • a webGIS module for data visualization and handling;
  • a user interface to handle the monitoring service and to access to user own webGIS account;

2. OSIRIS-VAP system to process the satellite data:

  • a module for object detection (searching for vessel on the acquired images, their size measurement as width and length);
  • a module for vessel classification (type/category of vessel as Fishing, Thank, Cargo…), and for vessel recognition (searching for exact ship on the VHR Electro Optical data);
  • a module for route prediction (to track the past route and to estimate the next route);

3. OSIRIS-DATA system to share the data and to provide the data access:

  • modules to planning, gathering and processing the data.
