Workshop, Executive Summary

ESRIN 11-12 October 2012

Organised by the HMA Architecture Working Group

Exploiting Earth Observation from space presents major opportunities for the researchers addressing global change challenges. Major challenges for the Earth System where Earth Observation data will make a major contribution have been identified.
The Workshop “Models for scientific exploitation of EO Data” brings together data and mission owners, research institutions and scientists, to outline the new trends and models able to close the gap between missions, data and the Earth System challenges the scientists want to address.

High Level Objectives

  • Analysis, of information-based services in support to the EO data utilization. Overview of current initiatives, of the possible evolution of ESA’s Research and Service Support model, and of similar international and European initiatives like GEO Supersites.
  • Cooperative/joint European space agencies and research centers definition of a harmonized model of research and service support and in the identification and definition of related processes and best practices,
  • Identificationof technology, harmonisation requirements and service models finalized to the federation of payload data ground segment services to the scientific community.
