simplify EO data exploitation


The ESA Research and Service Support (RSS) service has the mission to support the Earth Observation community in exploiting EO data, the researchers in developing new algorithms and applications, and the service providers in generating and delivering value-added information. 
The RSS service supports data provisioning, access and processing, allowing scientists and service developers alike, to benefit from the resources made available via ESA and consisting of dedicated processes, specific know-how, scalable infrastructures, and massive EO data archives. 
RSS aims on the one hand to ensure that the research process is effectively and efficiently followed, and on the other hand to support exploitation environments enabling the possibility to generate products and derived information meeting specific requirements. 
Specifically the RSS support to the EO Community covers the following: 
Provisioning of EO data from a wide range of missions and associated resources 
e-Collaboration, Scientific and Exploitation Environments: support the research, development and pilot of environments for distributed collaboration, systematic or ad-hoc extraction of information, service chaining and provision 
Applications and Services: Support application development and service provision, also as result of cooperation among scientist, value adders and service providers
Information Based Services: Support the development and provision of services based on the information extracted from the real time or archived EO data
Test-beds and Reference Systems: Support the development and provision of test-beds, reference systems and data-sets 

RSS System

RSS Users

Scientists (research centres, universities), service developers (sme or industry) and European or international institutions who have started their work locally on their workstations with some data samples and want to “scale up” to massive data processing or wide service exposure. 

RSS Support

Within the process depicted in the figure below, the RSS service provides support in four main areas: provisioning of data and resources, processing performed on the basis of users’ algorithm, data analysis, and publishing and sharing community information. 

RSS Service Model

  1. Basic Support Services:
    provide provisioning and access to EO Data through standard Query-Order services and to available Toolboxes for EO Data Processing. These services are used over the full research and service development process.
  2. Development Support Services:
    provide access to EO resources and toolboxes/processing components for algorithm development and test. These services are employed either during the Hypothesis formulation research process step or during the service development step.
  3. Processing Support Services:
    provide access to virtualized and scalable Cloud Computing resources, enabling mass data processing and collection of results (required during the Perform Experiment and Data interpretation process step).
  4. Support to Product Validation:
    support and provision of reference data like ground truth or independently produced products and related processing resources required to conduct the validation. These services are essential to establish the quality of the processing and a pre-requisite for any collaborative product.
  5. Production and Service Support:
    configuration of new services allowing the systematic data processing in near real time and/or on long time series. Management of user access to the new services and the possibility of service orchestration. These services are linked to the Publish Results activity, when the research has been concluded and the results are made available to the community.
