Introduction and Objectives

The CRE developed within the EO-LDAS project is still in a prototyping phase, being limited both in the number of available functionalities and in the test cases performed so far. Hence, the idea here is to further develop the CRE software environment, in terms of RTM and ICT capabilities, to turn it into a true user-friendly and flexible community facility, enabling scientists to easily generate EO land products, test algorithms, and perform a variety of Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs).
In particular, the objective of the project is to expand the capability of the CRE by:
(1)Integrating new RTM capabilities from optical RTMs (e.g. RAMI-type models, TIPS or other models) and microwave RTMs (e.g. CMEM-type models, or other passive/active sensor models) to further exploit synergies across sensors in order to derive consistent EO-based land products;
(2)Optimising the CRE software environment for data-intensive scalable cloud-type computing in order to enable integration into Exploitation Platforms infrastructures. This also includes customizing the software to user needs and properly documenting it (through manuals, tutorials, etc.);
(3)Developing a portfolio of use cases enabling users to verify CRE functionalities and validate the generated data products. This includes generating a set of integrated data for testing (e.g. Envisat/MERIS, SMOS, PROBA-V, or synthetic data representing Sentinel-2 or 3);
(4)Promoting actively the use of the tool to the scientific community.

Expected Results

The final improved prototype is planned to be deployed on a dedicated computing infrastructure (e.g. CEMS) to support the scientific community in the exploitation of large volumes of EO data generated by upcoming missions such as the Sentinels.
